Face masks now mandatory at Winnipeg’s airport

Starting this Wednesday everyone heading through Winnipeg’s airport must wear a mask or facial covering. Marie Gomez has more.

WINNIPEG – Beginning Wednesday, all visitors, passengers, and employees at the airport will need to wear a mask or face covering in the terminal.

The Winnipeg Airports Authority says it is adding this extra safety measure, on top of encouraging regular hand washing and physical distancing, to further protect the community.

The mandatory mask rules will blanket all public areas of Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG) as passenger volume increases and makes staying six feet apart from one another becomes more difficult.

“This added preventative measure helps to ensure the safety of all inside the airport, particularly in high-traffic areas, and to further instill traveller confidence each step of the way,” reads an email from the WAA.

Previously the WAA only required passengers to wear a mask any time they were unable to maintain a safe six-foot distance from others, when going through security, and during the boarding process.
