Racist rant caught on video in Richmond

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — Mounties are investigating after a woman with her daughter was the target of a racist tirade in a Richmond parking lot.

The Richmond RCMP got involved after video of a confrontation Friday afternoon surfaced on social media.

In the video you can see two cars parked bumper to bumper, one of them having crossed the white line dividing two spots.

A white woman raises her voice at a woman off-camera. She sticks her tongue out, repeatedly uses a racial slur, and swears at the woman off-camera.

“Go back to China where you belong,” she says. “We hate you people.”

The woman who made the video of the racist rant was with her young daughter and her mother at the plaza Friday afternoon, according to a friend who contacted NEWS 1130 but who does not want to be named.

After dropping her mother off at a clinic, she and her daughter returned to find another car had encroached on her spot, hitting her car’s bumper.

When the driver of the offending vehicle returned, things quickly escalated.

“Then my friend started taping this,” says the friend. “She was furious. Her daughter is a kid and that woman just cursing in front of her, that’s really disgusting.” The video was originally posted to WeChat.

Richmond RCMP say they have opened an investigation and the woman told her friend she intends to give a statement.

She says she wanted to speak on her friend’s behalf and shared the video to show that racist discrimination does happen in Canada.

“It’s evidence,” she says.

The Richmond RCMP say it has identified and contacted those in the video. While the investigation continues, the police are asking the public to hold back comments online.

“In order to ensure the integrity of the investigation and privacy of the individuals involved, we are asking the public to respect the investigative process and refrain from posting any comments on social media,” Insp. Sunny Parmar says.

They ask anyone with additional information to contact the Richmond RCMP.
