Man dead in officer-involved shooting

WINNIPEG (CITYNEWS) – The Independent Investigations Unit (IIU) has been called in after a man was killed in an officer-involved shooting.
Friday night shortly before 8 p.m., police encountered a man acting suspiciously near Sargent Ave and Maryland Street.
Police say when they approached the man he fled. Officers encountered the man a little while later in a nearby vacant lot at which time the man pulled out a weapon.
Officers then “discharged their firearms” according to the WPS. The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition but later died.
The IIU has taken over the case. The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
