‘Worse than we ever even thought’: Bombers social media on Regina-style pizza ahead of Labour Day matchup

It’s one of the most important weekends in the world of Canadian football, the Labour Day weekend.
With it come some historic rivalries — the Blue Bombers versus the Roughriders, the Stampeders vs. Edmonton, the Argonauts versus the Ti-Cats — and some rather heated moments.
While fans are gearing up to watch the Winnipeg Blue Bombers take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders on the field, things are heating up off the field before the weekend’s game even kicks off.
“A statement, three years in the making,” is how things started on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ social media pages on Tuesday.

“In 2023, this account posted four words that we knew, even as we hit send, were going to cause problems: ‘Honestly, Regina-style pizza is terrible.'”
That post got a lot of backlash, especially from those to the west who bleed green.
“The response was immediate. It was not kind. Our notifications did not recover for several days, and if we’re being honest, neither did some of our interns,” the statement continued. “We’ve had three years since then. Three years to sit with what we said, to think about the timing, consider the fans on the other side of that rivalry who felt, understandably, attacked over cheese and ketchup.
“We wanted to take a moment, on this anniversary, to finally say something about it.”
The statement continued, saying, “Three years of reflection. Countless DMs. At least one strongly worded email from a Regina City Councillor’s cousin, allegedly. We took it all seriously. We sat with it. We even ate a slice, out of due diligence, in the name of fairness and journalistic integrity. “And so, finally, after three long years of reflection, we’d like to say: It didn’t change anything. It’s still terrible.”
“Honestly, it’s worse than we ever even thought. It’s like someone took a three-week old lasagna and slapped it on a piece of dough. It’s awful, and our opinion will never change.”

Naturally, the statement on Tuesday got a lot of backlash from Riders fans, which will not be repeated here.
While the statement also comes exactly three years after their original post, it also comes a week after the BC Lions asked their team for thoughts on the dish, that, just like a bunny hug, no one in the rest of Canada has even heard of.

Regardless of the social media war, the Bombers will look to bounce back from last year’s 34-30 Labour Day loss. The Roughriders hold a 39-21 all-time record for Labour Day games, dating back to 1949. But the Bombers hold the all-time record of 13-8 in the Banjo Bowl.
