Fire at Main Street Project displaces some shelter residents

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is investigating a fire at the Main Street Project building – on Main Street and Logan Avenue – early Thursday morning.

A monitored fire alarm was triggered shortly before 3 a.m. Crews arrived to find smoke inside the building, and they evacuated all occupants. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 3:09 a.m.

The WFPS says prior to firefighters arriving, Main Street Project staff used fire extinguishers, which helped “to keep it small and contained” to a single room.

The shelter remained open at reduced capacity, with some displaced residents moved to other shelters in the area.
