Winnipeg Police (WPS) Chief Gene Bowers apologized to the family of the dead woman who was photographed by an officer.
WPS Officer Elston Bostock pleaded guilty to a number of serious charges, including offering an indignity to human remains, which involved taking a topless photo of a woman’s dead body.
In a statement on Friday, Bowers said, “The information entered into the Court record is deeply concerning.”
Bowers acknowledged the “profound harm and pain” the incident has caused.
“This is why I personally met with the family and apologized for the horrific treatment of their loved one,” he added.
Bostock, who has served in WPS for 22 years, allegedly also stole from evidence, used his connections to get his contacts out of tickets and offered favours in exchange for whisky and cigars.
According to Bowers, Bostock’s current status remains suspended without pay.
