A Winnipeg family feels it is the victim of mistaken identity, claiming its house in the East Kildonan neighbourhood has been wrongfully targeted by vandals.

The family is shaken, fearful and desperate for answers.

The tenant’s sister, who asked to remain anonymous, says the family moved into a rental property in December, just weeks before the vandalism began.

“They had come and broken the bottom basement window and bear maced the front door,” she said. “We were not excepting them to come back. We didn’t know why they did that.

“This is a nice neighbourhood, so we were definitely not thinking that anything like this was going to happen here.”

She says it’s happened four times since they’ve moved in. The most recent incident was caught on their security camera.

Video shows what appears to be BB guns, a baton and bear spray used on the front entrance. The sister says the now-boarded up windows were broken, and CityNews indeed saw broken glass scattered on the ground.

The family, which includes young children, is in a state of constant fear. They don’t know why they are being targeted.

“When they came with the BB gun, he was watching a movie on the couch, and he thought people were breaking in,” the sister recounted.

Winnipeg police would not provide details on the case other than to say they are investigating.

The family is hoping the individuals who are responsible realize they have the wrong person.

“There’s a family who lives here, a four-year-old kid who is being traumatized by these violent incidents, and we hope when they realize we’re not the family they’re looking for, hopefully they stop.”

The family is considering moving but is hoping the situation can be resolved before then.
