Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating an officer-involved shooting that allegedly took place in Shamattawa First Nation on Saturday afternoon.
RCMP say they received reports of an armed man – who had previously fired the weapon inside a home – walking around the community at around 1 p.m.
Officers say they began patrolling the area and heard several shots being fired.
Police say they found the suspect outside of a home. The suspect then allegedly shot at police, who returned fire and struck the man.
The 22-year-old suspect was taken to a nursing station with serious injuries. He was later taken to Health Sciences Centre for further treatment.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is mandated to investigate. A team of IIU investigators was deployed to Shamattawa, in northern Manitoba.
