Will the latest Liberal scandal take our eyes off a massacre inquiry?

By The Big Story

Evidence released at an inquiry into the Portapique massacre indicates that government officials may have pressured the RCMP commissioner to release information about a weapon used by the shooter. And so once again, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals find themselves at the centre of a scandal relating to government overreach.

We’re joined today by Stephen Maher, a Nova Scotian novelist and journalist who wrote about the political scandal in The Line.

“Everyone who’s studied this knows that the RCMP should be kept at arm’s length from government,” he said, “and it appears here that Lucki was allowing the political agenda of Trudeau and Blair to interfere with an investigation.”

We don’t know yet if the request came from the government, or from the commissioner herself. We don’t yet know if the Prime Minister or Public Safety Minister were personally involved. So what do we know? What needs to happen next? And will this divert attention away from an incredibly important inquiry into the worst mass shooting in Canadian history?
