Graffiti writers’ relationship grows through tagging, adding colour to Winnipeg

Two graffiti artists on the mean streets of Winnipeg say they’ve learned a lot about each other and their artform in their attempt to go city-wide together. @_MorganModjeski reports.

For a lot of couples, a date night might include a dinner out or a movie. But for Winnipeg graffiti writers Vixen and C4, their date nights bring them to places like the underbelly of the train bridge near Archibald Street.

The two have been together for 3 years and have been doing graffiti together for at least a year. They say the illegal artform has helped them mature and understand each other as people and artists.

“We’re always paying attention to what each other is doing,” said Vixen. “So it’s kind of like, ‘Oh that’s interesting’ or ‘Where did you learn that? Or ‘What made you think of doing that? I’m totally stealing that, because that looks like an awesome technique.’ So we’re always growing from each other in that sense.

“I guess we’re each other’s muses so to speak.”

The couple says alongside an artistic expression, they’re trying to go “city-wide,” which means their tags will be attached to walls from one end of Winnipeg to the other.

“Get out there. Get our names up,” said Vixen.

“And colour the walls at the same time,” added C4. “Make some good art for people to enjoy. Some people look down on it, but there are others with open minds, and I’ve had many conversations with people when I’m in the middle of doing it and they say they love it. Some say they don’t like it, but it is what it is.”

The two say it’s a mission they’re in together, saying there is only one way to describe what it’s like when they go out to do the illegal art.

“It’s a thrill, really,” said C4.

There’s no two ways around it, the art, while stimulating to the eye, is a crime and city officials have advised that illegal graffiti is not welcome. Vixen and C4 say the art has taught them a lot about the city and their relationship.

“She is my best friend, so why not spend time with your best friend doing something you both love doing,” said C4.

Added Vixen: “And it’s fun finding spots and exploring the area and learning the city.”

“The adventure is pretty much half the battle,” said C4.

The two artists say they would encourage other couples to take up the criminally questionable hobby if they’re willing to explore and adventure their city.
