Man, 27, charged with attempted murder, theft in Winnipeg’s St. Vital neighbourhood

Winnipeg police (WPS) have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with an attempted murder and robbery in the St. Vital neighbourhood Wednesday night.

Police received a 911 call around 8 p.m. reporting a stabbing incident at an apartment building in the 600 block of Dakota Street.

According to WPS, the suspect was allegedly armed with a knife and believed to be intoxicated. He was refusing to leave a family home.

Police say he allegedly attempted to stab woman in her 40s, who was able to defend herself with a laundry basket and managed not to be injured. The suspect then left the suite and was locked out of the building but continued attempting to re-enter the building, police say.

Outside, the accused allegedly stabbed and seriously injured a man in his 50s after the suspect robbed a teen boy at knifepoint while also trying re-enter the building.

The injured man was taken to hospital in a critical condition but was later said to be in stable condition.

Marvin Nallaq Shimout, who is from Coral Harbour in Nunavut, faces several charges, including two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery and possession of a weapon. He was arrested and remains in police custody.

The allegations against him have yet to be tested in court.
