City of Brandon removing ‘super sandbags’ water level of Assiniboine River continues to recede

Major flood barriers are beginning to come down in Brandon, west of Winnipeg, as fears of flooding continue torecede.
The City of Brandon says provincial crews were slated to begin removing the “super sandbags,” which can hold over a tonne of sand, along 1st Street on Monday.
“This work will take some time, and we ask residents to please give crews plenty of space to work safely,” the city wrote on Facebook. “Motorists should also expect delays in the area as equipment and personnel are on site throughout the removal process.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we continue moving from flood response into recovery.”
The city is also dismantling inflatable flood protections and cleaning up around homes that had flood barriers.
High water on the Assiniboine River peaked two weeks ago, on July 13, and has since retreated 1.7 metres.
Manitoba saw multiple floods in June and early July because of heavy rain, especially in the Parkland region.
On Monday, the province announced it was expanding the number of communities that can apply for help from its flood recovery program.
