West Broadway apartment building fire sends 8 to hospital

Eight people needed to be hospitalized, including one in unstable condition, after a fire at a three-storey apartment building in Winnipeg’s West End.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the building on Furby Street, in West Broadway, at 3:09 a.m.

Firefighters helped some residents get out of the building while others evacuated on their own, the WFPS said.

The blaze was declared under control at 4:20 a.m.

Nine people were assessed by paramedics on the scene, of which eight were taken to hospital. A firefighter was also assessed by paramedics for a minor injury.

The city is providing temporary support for displaced residents.

The fire is under investigation.
