Winnipeg police (WPS) have launched a new e-bike patrol program to help officers locations hard to reach by cruisers and improve police visibility.
The e-bikes will help officers navigate crowded events, neighbourhood pathways and parks where patrol vehicles can’t always go.
“We just had an incident (…) where there was an emergency call and traditional units were dispatched to it, and they were attending and on route to it, but our member on the e-bike arrived first,” said Biran Miln, superintendent, uniform operations at WPS.
Winnipeg police have added 16 e-bikes to their patrol fleet, with four assigned to each of the city’s four districts.
“When there’s an emergency and 911’s engaged, it does not preclude our cruiser cars from attending when necessary,” said Jennifer Mckinnon, WPS central district commander. “However, these bikes are much more nimble and we’ll be able to access those areas quicker, easier than what a cruiser car would.”
Twenty-five officers have been trained to patrol by the specialized bicycles, including doing emergency stops and defensive tactics to navigating stairs, curbs and difficult terrain.
“We ride all over the city, do different skills. We ride slow, we ride fast, we ride upstairs, we ride downstairs, curbs, all sorts of terrains. So, it’s a lot of variable riding,” explained Emily Meronyk, instructor for the WPS bicycle patrol.
Police say training is already paying of highlighting their effectiveness during last weekend’s Manitoba Marathon.
The bicycle patrol will operate between the months of May and October.
