1 person in critical condition after River-Osborne apartment fire rescue

One person was critically injured in a fire at a three-storey apartment building on River Avenue on Tuesday evening.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) says firefighters rescued the person from the suite where the fire started. The injured person was taken to hospital in critical condition.

All other occupants had managed to leave the building before firefighters arrived. Paramedics assessed seven other people at the scene; they did not require transport to hospital.

A Winnipeg Transit bus was dispatched to provide shelter for the evacuees, and the city’s emergency social services provided temporary support for displaced residents.

Crews were called to the building around 6:30 p.m., with initial reports indicating people may be trapped in the building.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the building. The blaze was deemed under control shortly after 7 p.m.

The WFPS and the Winnipeg Police Service are investigating.
