Man charged with arson in downtown Winnipeg Dollarama fire

Winnipeg police say a 33-year-old man has been charged with arson after a fire was set inside a downtown Dollarama last month.

The Winnipeg Police Service says a fire was started at the Dollarama on Portage Avenue between Donald and Smith streets on May 5.

Authorities allege a man entered the store around 6:55 p.m., set some merchandise on fire, then fled. A still image from surveillance footage inside the store shows flames in one of the aisles.

“The fire quickly spread and resulted in substantial property and merchandise damage,” police said in a news release. “Onsite security extinguished the fire and nobody was injured.”

Police say Dwayne Earl Scatch was arrested at the Winnipeg Remand Centre on Thursday. He was already in custody on an unrelated matter.

He was charged with arson causing damage to property and failure to comply with probation. He remains in custody. The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
