Quebec man facing additional charges connected to grandparent scam

Winnipeg police say a 24-year-old from Quebec has been charged in connection to a string of grandparent scams in February.

WPS says in March, they took a 24-year-old man from Quebec into custody after an 80-year-old received a phone call from someone pretending to be a justice official. The scammer allegedly indicated that the victim’s relative had been arrested and required money to avoid going to jail.

The victim agreed to pay, and a man they did not know came to their home and picked up the money. The victim later checked with their family and discovered this story wasn’t true and they had been scammed.

After the 24-year-old was in custody, police were able to connect him to four other incidents in Winnipeg and two in Portage la Prairie.

In each of the incidents, the victim was in their 70s or 80s, and was informed that their grandchild or nephew needed bail money.

As a result, police have since charged 24-year-old Lyven Lemieux-Theriault with three counts of fraud over $5,000 and three counts of fraud under $5,000.
