Winnipeg’s Grant’s Old Mill closes due to safety concerns

Grant’s Old Mill, which has been a landmark of Winnipeg since 1829, has closed.

The closure was announced on social media on Sunday, stating that the structure is no longer safe.

“This decision has been incredibly difficult. For generations, the Mill has stood as a place where our community gathered, learned, celebrated, and connected. It holds our stories—of the beginnings of the local economy, of Red River Métis, Scottish, and First Nations cultures, and of the people who built lives along the water that sustained them as far back as 1829,” read a post on Instagram.

The post would go on to explain that the Mill cannot be repaired, and it will be dismantled.

The social media post also went on to explain that there is a plan to fully rebuild the Mill once it’s demolished; however, that will require at least $600,000 in fundraising to be done.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has shown up, supported us, and donated so far. You are the reason we still have hope,” read the social media post.

The Mill has previously been a place where children learn history, families gather, where culture is lived through land, language, agriculture, traditions, and crafts, and where community truly comes alive.

A full vision for the future of the Mill grounds will be unveiled on July 11.
