Over 20 Winnipeg peace groups rallied against global wars and called on governments to cut military spendings.
Dozens of Winnipeggers gathered with posters and flags at the steps of the Manitoba Legislative Building.
Their main message: global peace.
“We are very concerned about an increase in military spending, the increase to meet the NATO targets,” said Candice Bodnaruk, executive director, Peace Alliance Winnipeg. “The cuts that we’ve seen on a federal level to social programs in Canada.”
Tyler Gingrich, one of the rally attendees said, “We need to lift up the rights of people everywhere. There is a sense of solidarity and hope in that, especially given that it’s not the nicest day.”
Speakers also highlighted the harmful impact of armed conflicts and military industry on the environment
Bryan Hammond said, “At a time when we are supposed to be making living more in harmony with the environment. We are doing the exact opposite. Just stomp on the gas over the cliff. That’s insane.”
Following the speeches the protesters marched along Broadway Street to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights.
“I am incredibly encouraged to see people from so many walks of life saying that we have to end our dependence on war,” said Byron Rempel Burkholder.
