4-year-old boy rescued after falling into creek near Winkler

A four-year-old boy is in stable condition after falling into a creek southeast of Winkler on Monday afternoon.

Police say the boy and his older brother were playing in their yard when they wandered toward a nearby creek without permission.

The four-year-old was playing on some ice and snow that broke off, Manitoba RCMP say, causing him to fall into the creek. It happened shortly before 5 p.m.

The boy’s brother rushed inside and alerted their mother, who ran to the creek but couldn’t see him. She later spotted him down the creek, where he had been carried by the current through a culvert.

While the mother didn’t know how to swim, police indicate, that didn’t stop her from jumping into the creek and pulling the boy out with the help of a neighbour. She performed CPR on her son and revived him while a neighbour called 911.

Paramedics treated the boy at the scene, with police saying he was alert. He was transported by helicopter to a Winnipeg hospital.
