More snow expected for southern Manitoba

Start of spring marked with snow in Manitoba

March 20 marked the start of spring, but here in Winnipeg, it’s anything but, as another round of snow is moving through the region.

Environment Canada says parts of southern Manitoba could see up to 10 centimetres of snow with this system, with higher amounts possible further south and southwest, and roughly 2-4 centimeters in Winnipeg.

They say that while it may feel late in the season, snowfall this time of year is actually quite common, with Winnipeg typically seeing snow even into April.

The City of Winnipeg says crews are monitoring conditions and are ready to respond, while also shifting between snow clearing and spring maintenance like pothole repairs. And while some milder temperatures could be on the way, Environment Canada warns that Manitobans should expect the unexpected.

“We have some maybe milder temperatures into next week, maybe closer to seasonal. Seasonal for Winnipeg right now is about a 5-degree high or so, and we’re kind of right around the freezing mark or a degree or two below or above. So, we might have some more seasonal temperatures next week. But I wouldn’t be storing away the winter gear just yet, just in case,” said Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
