Winnipeg police allege a 52-year-old man set fire to furniture inside his apartment in the River-Osborne neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon.
The Winnipeg Police Service says the fire at the apartment building on Clarke Street spread quickly and that it “caused significant damage and endangered the lives of other tenants.”
Police arrived at the scene around 3:30 p.m. and were told by members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) that the fire was being investigated as suspicious.
James Douglas Lysak was found inside the building and arrested. He was charged with arson with disregard for human life and was detained in custody. The allegation has not been tested in court.
