Harlem Globetrotters bring their 100 Year Tour to Winnipeg

They spin it, they dunk it, and they bring the laughs. The Harlem Globetrotters are dribbling into Winnipeg Sunday and this isn’t your average basketball game.

“It’s a lot of dedication and hard work and a lot of barriers that we broken down so we want to keep doing that for another 100 years,” says Angelo ‘Spider’ Sharpless of the Harlem Globetrotters.

For 100 years, the Harlem Globetrotters have brought over 26,000 games mixing elite basketball skills, comedy and crowd engagement into a show that’s become famous around the world.

The Globetrotters broke barriers, sold out arenas and inspired generations long before basketball became a global sport.

Louis ‘Sweet Lou II’ Dunbar, a second-generation Globetrotter, says it’s an honour for him to follow his father’s footsteps.

“My dad he is a Harlem Globetrotter legend, Sweet Lou Dunbar, so he’s been with the organization for 49 years,” Dunbar says. “So it’s a huge honor for me to be able to follow in his footsteps and continue that legacy,” says

Reading the audience, sharing the moment, and making sure everyone leaves smiling is what it’s all about for the Harlem Globetrotters.

“A thousand smiles and getting that same feeling they got back in the golden ages when Curly O’Neill, Meadowlark Lemon played and Sweet Lou Dunbar, to now, just brining it to a more modern year,” said Sharpless.
