Manitoba announced a new business security rebate program, Thursday, to help small businesses cover the cost of criminal property damage.
Business owners in Manitoba can now apply for up to $2,500 to help cover the cost of repairs of property as well as the purchase and installation of security equipment.
Manitoba Justice Minister Matt Wiebe said, “This rebate will help make things like glass break sensors, reinforced doors, impact resistant glass and motion sensors more affordable for small businesses and allow them, those who have been the victims of crime to repair the damage to their property.”
Vince Croker, vice president of Clearsecure, a company that sells safety glasses used by businesses to protect storefronts said, “I think it’s a great thing, because the vandalism isn’t going away, with the rise in cost and everything else that’s happening in the world now.”
“I didn’t do a whole lot of glass with vandalism back in the day. But now it seems to be one of the biggest issues,” said Croker, who has been in the glass business for 45 years.
The program has $10 million available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Businesses with 75 or fewer employees per location can apply for a rebate to offset expenses associated with repairs or purchasing security equipment done on or after Aug. 23.
