Flower shops across Winnipeg are preparing for one of their busiest weekends of the year as customers line up ahead of Mother’s Day celebrations.
At Academy Florist, staff have been working nonstop to keep up with the surge in orders.
“This is our busiest holiday of the year,” said Kayla Robinson, owner of Academy Florist. “We’ve got hundreds of orders coming out on delivery and for pick up. It’s all week we have been going since Monday nonstop.”
Behind the scenes, florists are arranging dozens of bouquets as demand continues to build heading into the weekend.
“This shop has already been really busy lining up before we open and will expect the same thing tomorrow,” Robinson said. “There will be a line before we open at 9 a.m.”
As families prepare to celebrate Mother’s Day, many shoppers say flowers are one way to show appreciation for the mothers in their lives.
“Oh my mom’s like everything to me, like my whole foundation, my whole support system,” said one customer.
“Pretty much the same with me as well,” another added. “My mom is everything to me and I wouldn’t be here without her.”
Others say the holiday brings back memories connected to motherhood and family traditions.
“I think it reminds you of like the really fun times of motherhood,” one shopper said.
Another customer, shopping for his 95-year-old mother, said this year’s celebration is especially meaningful.
“I give flowers several times a year,” he said. “I live in Vancouver, but I have them usually sent, but this year I’m making a special trip.”
With bouquets in hand, many Winnipeggers are preparing to celebrate the mothers and mother figures who mean the most to them.
