Football fans from coast-to-coast land in Winnipeg for the Grey Cup

CFL fans from coast-to-coast have begun arriving in Winnipeg ahead of the Grey Cup on Sunday. Eddie Huband reports.

Winnipeg is three days away from the Grey Cup, but the buzz is already growing in the city’s downtown, as football fans from coast-to-coast have begun descending on the ‘Peg for the big game.

Much to the chagrin of Winnipeggers, there were plenty of green Riders jerseys flooding the streets. This included the Squires, who travelled here all the way from Newfoundland to support their team.

“It would be pretty nice. It’s been a while since we’ve been in the Grey Cup, been a while since we won it, so winning it in Winnipeg would be pretty sweet,” said Stephen Squires, a Roughriders fan from Newfoundland.

Doug Squires, Stephens father and fellow Riders fan, “Well, I don’t know what Winnipeggers will think of it, I’m sure they’re going for anybody but the Riders, but just for me, my good friend is an Alouettes’ fan and he’s coming, and the last time the Riders were in it was against the Alouettes so it would be nice to triumph this time over the Alouettes.”

Adding, “We’ve got guys coming in, Alouettes’ fans, Calgary fans, Edmonton fans, so it’s just a really great time.”

But it isn’t Riders faithful infiltrating enemy territory, fans from all over the country have come to town to take in the pinnacle of Canadian football, and explore Winnipeg.

“Loving it, we got in last night and we’re here just as the festival is kicking off and everything, so we’re looking forward to even getting to the convention centre, haven’t been there yet, and exploring a little bit more, so it’s going to be great, parties are going to be a blast,” said Bob Fraser, a Redblacks fan from Oshawa.

Mike Nese, a Stampeders fan from Sudbury, said, “Second time in Winnipeg, but first time for a Grey Cup, but same thing, got here last night and so far having a great time.”

While Russell Hendrix, an Argos fan from Toronto, said, “Love it, just got in last night, wandered around a bit, found a few good places to hang out, and now we’re looking forward to it. I can’t believe the weather.”

Of course, there’s plenty of Winnipeg fans out and about as well, but say it’s bittersweet with the Bombers not taking part, they’re relishing the chance to show off what the city has to offer incomers.

“We hope that people don’t just go to local bars and so on, but take advantage and go to the Human Rights museum, and the Forks, and see the local attractions,” said Nicki and John Clearwater, who are hoping the Riders lose by 50.

Claudia Byczek, a Bombers fan, added, “A lot of times when I’ve gone to Grey Cups, it’s the first time visiting the city, so I hope they have a chance to see more of the city than just the Convention Centre. Even though it’s going to be great here, there’s a lot of great things to see in Winnipeg.”
