Officers cleared in separate IIU investigations

Manitoba’s police — the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) — has cleared officers in two separate investigations.

One of the investigations involved an injury that occurred in Winnipeg while officers were trying to apprehend a cyclist in June.

Reports indicate that around 1:15 a.m. on June 10, officers attempted to stop a cyclist near McPhillips Street and McDermot Avenue, however, as the cyclist tried to flee, he fell off his bike.

He was taken to the Victoria General Hospital, where it was determined that he had fractured his right clavicle.

The IIU was notified and conducted an investigation, where they ruled that, due to the circumstances of the incident, no charges would be laid against police officers.

They also note that the cyclist remains before the court on charges arising from the incident.

Teen fatally shot in Norway House First Nation

Additionally, the IIU has also closed its investigation regarding an officer-involved shooting in Norway House First Nation.

On Nov. 22, the IIU received a report that a police officer had fatally shot an armed 17-year-old.

Mounties said it followed a report earlier in the day that a man was “agitated” and armed with an “edged weapon” in a home on Norway House Cree Nation.

He was outside with the weapon when officers arrived and, despite numerous orders to drop it, he moved toward them, RCMP said.

An officer then shot the youth, and police provided medical aid until paramedics arrived.

A 17-year-old from Norway House was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Due to the nature of the incident, IIU investigators immediately responded and began an investigation.

During the investigation, the IIU interviewed the four officers and three civilian witnesses before ruling that, due to the nature of the circumstances, charges would not be laid against the officer.
