An elderly man and woman were both sent to hospital with injuries after being assaulted by a man in the 300 block on Elgin Ave., on Saturday, resulting in officers deploying tasers to make the arrest.
The assault happened just after 6:30 p.m., Winnipeg police were called to the 300 block of Elgin Ave. after hearing reports of a man running into traffic at passing vehicles.
At the scene they discovered that an 80-year-old woman and an 85-year-old man had been walking on the sidewalk nearby when the suspect reportedly ran at the woman and pushed her to the ground. The man attempted to intervene and was punched in the face. The alleged assault continued, and both were repeatedly punched and stomped on while on the ground. When officers arrived on scene, the suspect was uncooperative.
“It did take several officers and more than one deployment of a taser or a conducted energy weapon to safely take this male into custody,” said Stephen Spencer, Winnipeg police service.
Both victims were transported to hospital, one in stable condition and the other in unstable condition, with non-life-threatening but serious injuries.
“Assaults do happen on elderly individuals here and there, we hear it happen in Winnipeg but often times it’s in regard to a robbery or maybe a dispute,” said Spencer. “But for a vicious assault like this to take place just in broad daylight in the middle of the street on Elgin, in my opinion it’s quite rare.”
28-year-old Nathan Droy Paul has been charged with aggravated assault x 2, resisting a peace officer, and a warrant of apprehension and suspension of parole/statutory release.
He was detained in custody.
