Ankle monitor triggers arrest and theft charges in Winnipeg

An alert from a court-ordered ankle monitor resulted in the arrest of a suspect on theft charges after violating geographic restrictions.
At 3:55 p.m. on Wednesday, the Manitoba Justice Electronic Monitoring Program notified the Winnipeg Police Service that a 45-year-old man on curfew went to a store in the 600 block of Notre Dame Ave., contrary to his release order.
Officials say at 4:06 p.m., officers attended to the suspects last known location, and located the him in the 500 block of Furby Street where he was taken into custody.
Officers also learned that the man had been identified as a suspect in shoplifting incident on Sept. 5, in the 1500 block of Regent Ave. West, where approximately $1,500 worth of merchandise was stolen.
The 45-year-old man is now facing charges of theft and violating probation and release orders.
He was detained in custody.
