4 victims of Hollow Water First Nation stabbing released from hospital: Shared Health

Shared Health says three people are still in hospital following the mass stabbing incident in Hollow Water First Nation on Thursday morning.

The health system said they declared a Code Orange at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre at 8:14 a.m. after hearing information regarding the mass stabbing.

Following this, five patients were taken by paramedics to the HSC, one was taken to the Selkirk Regional Health Centre, and two were transported by STARS helicopter to HSC.

The patients were all at varying levels of acuity, and two required operations for injuries they suffered. Shared Health notes that three people were able to be released from the HSC on Thursday, while a fourth was released on Friday. At this time, it is uncertain if the individual who was taken to Selkirk has been released or not.

“It is in difficult, emergency situations like this when our staff rise to the occasion with exceptional responses. We are thankful for each and every member of our team who stepped forward to provide care to these patients,” Shared Health said in a statement.

“This includes our paramedics who were among the first responders to the scene, emergency dispatchers at the Medical Transportation Coordination Centre and the physicians, nurses, allied health and support workers in emergency, ICU, surgery and medicine units. It also includes social workers, spiritual care, Indigenous Health services, patient relations staff and leadership.”

Shared Health would go on to add, “We offer our condolences to the victims and their community, families, and friends who were directly impacted by today’s devastating incident. We also offer our thoughts and sympathies to the patients we continue to care for and their families, as well as those who responded to the scene and all care teams involved.”
