Manitoba Hydro support workers looking to go on strike

Manitoba Hydro support workers might be going on strike soon.
CUPE 998, the union representing the support workers, says they’ve “received a strong strike mandate from its members following a bargaining stalemate.”
The union says it filed for conciliation support in an effort to reach a fair deal, but the strike vote comes due to reported “mismanagement by the previous PC government,” which has yet to be fixed by the current NDP government.
“Manitobans want to see Manitoba Hydro moving in the right direction after years of mismanagement,” said Michelle Bergen, President of CUPE 998. “Hydro workers can’t keep waiting for change.”
CUPE says issues that are on the table include wage increases, the reversal of privatization efforts, and the end to union-busting tactics by Hydro management.
“We need this government to put Manitoba Hydro on the right track,” said Gina McKay, President of CUPE Manitoba. “Manitobans know that supporting the front-line workers who provide our public services and utilities needs to be the top priority.”
At this time, no strike date has been set, however, the next steps will include filing for conciliation services in advance of a date being set.
