Couple charged with fraud, theft from Winnipeg legion branch

A couple is facing charges for allegedly misappropriating about $60,000 from a Royal Canadian Legion branch in Winnipeg.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s financial crime unit began investigating in December 2023 after receiving a complaint about suspicious use of funds, police said in a press release Thursday.

Investigators say they found a couple fraudulently diverted the legion’s funds to their joint account between May 2020 and April 2023.

A 70-year-old man and 61-year-old woman held unpaid positions at a legion in the Weston neighbourhood and were authorized to use the branch’s bank accounts. The stolen funds were used to pay the man an honorarium, to which he was not entitled, the WPS said.

Winnipeg police arrested the two seniors on Wednesday and released them with appearance notices. Both are charged with theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000.
