Manitoba’s police watchdog — The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) — says they are investigating a police involved shooting that happened in Winnipeg on Apr. 11.
The IIU says they were notified that Winnipeg police opened fire at a stolen vehicle, that attempted to flee, but subsequently crashed into a residential building, and caused a massive fire.
Reports indicate that police responded to a report of an impaired driver who was driving a stolen pick-up truck.
When officers arrived at the scene along Home Street between Portage Avenue and St. Matthews Avenue, they blocked off the street to prevent the stolen vehicle from fleeing, however, the driver reversed and struck a civilian vehicle behind it before driving forward toward a police vehicle. It was at this point that an officer fired their weapon.
The stolen vehicle proceeded to mount the east boulevard and fled northbound towards St. Matthews Avevue, where it struck the cruiser vehicle of a second responding unit, losing control and colliding with a residence in the 500 block of Home Street. The fire started and spread to a large fuel tank located in the bed of the pick-up truck, causing an explosion and igniting both the house and the truck.
If anyone has any information, they are asked to contact IIU’s investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
