A Good Samaritan who helped a man stabbed on a bus earlier this month says more people need to intervene in situations like this.
“Nobody else was helping. They just stood around and recorded it, just watched it happen,” said Katania McKay.
Katania McKay says it all started when two people tried to jump another man on her bus near Portage and Main.
“That’s when one of the people pulled out a huge knife, like this big, and stabbed him a few times in the abdomen area,” she explained.
She claims the attackers ran off, and the victim sat down in shock, blood pouring from his stomach.
“Some dude got a cloth to stop the bleeding, and that’s when I realized I had to put pressure on the wounds to slow it down before the paramedics came. He was losing a lot of blood super fast,” she explained.
“All I remember is him holding onto my arms. I could see he was really scared. He obviously didn’t want to die. I just kept repeating, ‘Just stay awake.’”
Emergency crews arrived and applied a chest seal – the victim survived.
Last week, Winnipeg police charged a 21-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy after executing a warrant on Toronto Street.
“I’m really glad they got arrested because you cannot do something like that and try to get away with it. Stuff like that’s just really evil.”
McKay says this whole thing has changed her life and perspective.
“Everybody has value in their own lives. It should matter who you are in stuff. You should never be a bystander and always help somebody who needs help.”
