Winnipeg dog owner facing animal cruelty charges

Winnipeg police say a 20-year-old is facing charges following reports that dogs were being mistreated in the Central Park neighbourhood.

WPS says around 1:50 p.m. on Apr. 4, officers responded to Edmonton Street near Portage Avenue after receiving a report that a man had been seen repeatedly and violently pulling on a dog’s leash.

Through the initial stages of an investigation, police learned the man lived in a nearby address and went to that location.

Around 3:50 p.m., the man was identified and was taken into custody, with police noting he was being uncooperative.

Two dogs were also seized by police and turned over to Animal Services.

The 20-year-old, who hasn’t been identified, is facing charges of animal cruelty and failing to comply with conditions of a release order. He has since been released on an undertaking with the condition not to possess any animals.
