14 children hospitalized with minor injuries after school bus crash southwest of Winnipeg

By News Staff

A collision involving a school bus and a pickup truck southwest of Winnipeg Wednesday morning sent all 14 children on the bus to hospital with minor injuries.

Pembina Valley RCMP say the 14 children on the bus – who ranged in age from kindergarten to Grade 11 – were hospitalized “as a precaution.” Some were transported to Winnipeg “for further assessment.”

The 17-year-old driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries, according to police, and was also treated in hospital. Charges are pending against him under the Highway Traffic Act.

Mounties say the collision happened around 8:30 a.m. in the RM of Lorne. Investigators believe the pickup truck was travelling south on Road 66 West when it collided with the rear driver’s side of the school bus that was heading east on Road 28 North.

Officers arrived to find the school bus on its passenger side in a ditch at the intersection, along with the pickup truck. All 14 children on the bus had already been evacuated, authorities say.

Pembina Valley RCMP are continuing to investigate.
