Winnipeg Folk Festival showcases Young Performers Program ahead of year 50

By News Staff

It’s a huge milestone for the Winnipeg Folk Festival and as it prepares to celebrate 50 years in 2025, it’s hosting a number of events as the countdown to the big event this summer continues.

A news release from the Winnipeg Folk Festival indicated there are just 177 days until music lovers converge on Birds Hill Park for the event, running from July 10 to 13, but for those who cannot wait, there are numerous performances taking place in the meantime.

On Jan. 18, the first of four free monthly library workshops will take place at the Charleswood Library on Roblin Boulevard, featuring performances by Cassidy Mann, Nic Dyson, and Slow Leaves, marking 24 years of the Young Performers Program.

The first of many, the festival has also debuted Little Steps by Manitoba artist and young performer alumni Melody Pearson Munroe as part of “The Little Stage in the Exchange” video series on its YouTube channel, featuring performance by artists within the Young Performers Program.

Going strong since 2000, the events are meant to showcase and celebrate the work and contributors of the Young Performers Program giving musicians aged 14 to 24 a chance to shine in one of the province’s best known festivals.

Over the course of the program, the young musicians and artists get to work with established performers to hone their craft, with applications for the 2025 festival opening in February.

Upcoming Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Series dates:
Mama’s Broke, Feb. 9, 2025 – West End Cultural Centre
Jeremie Albino, March 8 – The Park Theatre
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, March 15 – Canada Life Centre
Wild Rivers, April 19 – Burton Cummings Theatre
