A woman has died following a medical emergency during a dental appointment in Morden.
The Manitoba Dental Association (MDA) said a medical emergency occurred during an appointment and paramedics were called. The woman was taken to a hospital where she later died.
“The initial step that we’re taking at this time is gathering information. There are things that we need to understand to fully decide on next steps,” said Dr. Daron Baxter, president of the MDA.
Dr. Baxter said the association is investigating the incident seriously, speaking to those involved at the dental office where the incident occured as well as the local health authority.
“Going forward we’re in discussions to understand the events as they took place, so that we can further understand the facts as they led to this unfortunate outcome,” said Dr. Baxter.
A restriction has been put in place on the license of the dentist involved, however Dr. Baxter said the dentist is still able to practice as long as restrictions are adhered to.
“The practitioner is able to practice under the guise and restrictions placed by the registrar,” she said.
“I know the dentist involved has not been working today and is taking time to reflect on what occurred. This is not the outcome that anyone hopes for when undergoing this care, and so all parties involved are taking time to reflect.”
Dr. Baxter added the dentist involved has been cooperative in discussions with the MDA — following established protocols for serious incidents.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the friends and family of this young woman,” she said.
