Traffic stop turns into drugs and weapons arrest in Winnipeg: police

Winnipeg police officers were conducting a traffic stop on Sunday that led to a drug and weapon seizure around 7 a.m. at Mountain Avenue and McPhillips Street.

The Winnipeg Police Service says a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab occupied by four suspects began to speed up once they noticed the police traffic stop.

Officers were able to catch up and successfully conduct a traffic stop in the 600 block of McPhillips Street. Police say when speaking with the occupants, a folding knife and body armour were found in plain sight.

All occupants were placed under arrest without incident and removed from the vehicle.

Police add upon further inspection, the body armour was also found to contain a loaded 9mm handgun with a tampered serial number and seven rounds of ammunition.

A further search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of the following: 163 grams of methamphetamine, 3.6 grams of fentanyl, three grams of cocaine, packaging materials and roughly $9,300 in cash.

Kevin Raymond Scott Yestrau, 42, of Winnipeg was arrested and charged with multiple weapons, firearms, trafficking, and proceeds of crime-related charges and was detained in custody.

A 28-year-old woman, a 31-year-old man, and a 41-year-old man, all from Winnipeg, face similar charges and were released.
