A national commemorative ceremony is being held at the Canada Life Centre in honour of Murray Sinclair, who made a lasting impact on many across the nation.

“Murray Sinclair is one of those few people who has impacted us for years to come, and that our great great great grandchildren and beyond will speak about him,” said Niigaan Sinclair, Son of Murray Sinclair.

“Thinking of others was a teaching he’s passed on to me, and one I pass onto you. Empathy and kindness balanced with strength and leadership are what we need more of in this world,” added Sarah Fontaine-Sinclair, Granddaughter of Murray Sinclair.

Throughout his 73 years, Sinclair became one of the most decorated and influential people to work in Indigenous justice and advocacy.

“He was always quiet in his words, but he had strength to do something about it, that’s who I know Murray was,” said Betsy Kennedy, Acting Grand Chief of AMC.

“Though we have lost our teacher, we have not lost his teachings,” said Wab Kinew, Premier of Manitoba.

Murray Sinclair’s legacy is one of those that will live on forever, and among his family and friends in attendance, were the Prime Minister, Governor General, and other dignitaries paying their respects.

“Over the years he became to me a wise teacher, a trusted confident, an insightful elder, and above all a friend that always challenged me to do better,” said Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister.

“As a nation, let us honour his legacy by continuing our journey towards reconciliation,” said Mary Simon, Governor General.
