Animal advocates gather outside Winnipeg court demanding justice against alleged cat murderer

On Monday, dozens of animal advocates convened outside of the Winnipeg Law Courts, calling for justice, as the alleged cat murderer Irene Lima was set to appear for her bail hearing.

“She needs to stay in jail. She is a danger to animals probably people too so she needs to stay where she is,” said Krista Blahut, an animal rights advocate.

Chant’s of “No bail, stay in jail rang” out down prior to the bail hearing as community members voiced their anger towards the alleged acts of Chad Kabecz and Irene Lima, who were arrested on October 9th, and promptly charged with numerous offences after police say they discovered videos of the couple torturing and murdering cats and other small animals they had purchased online.

“As rescues, we want to find safe homes for our animals and Chad and Irene look like your average normal people,” said Mistir Hari, who runs a cat rescue in Steinbach.

Founder of Hello Whiskers Kitten Rescue, Hari says this whole experience has left rescues like his traumatized, not knowing who he can trust with the well-being of the animals that he cares for so much.

“Thankfully we haven’t but these poor kittens have and it’s just monstrous.”

But before those in attendance could even find their seats in the courtroom, they were informed they would have to come back another day, as Lima’s legal team opted to postpone the bail hearing to a later date.

While not the result the crowd came for, their calls for justice will continue

As for Lima’s alleged partner in crime in these gruesome acts, Chad Kabecz, he’s scheduled to be back in court on Tuesday.
