Warm weather extends golf season in Winnipeg

While the golf season in Winnipeg winds down, warmer temperatures are allowing golfers to wind up their swings for one more week.
Golfers are doing all they can to hold on to what could be the season’s final stretch.
“what’s going on with the climate, I think definitely summers are getting extended and I think it’s going to become a lot more normal to golf into October and early November,” said Conrad Kiesman, Golfing for 30 years.
“Not many years that you get to the opportunity to golf in late October,” said Kiesman.
Typically, by this time of year, frost would start to limit play, but instead, golf courses in Winnipeg are still open and remarkably busy. Over at St. Boniface Golf Club, they plan on staying open the rest of the week.
“We’ve been seeing the falls go a little bit later and a little bit later the last few years, so if that continues to be the trend or the norm then we’ll just adjust accordingly,” said Steve Wood, director of golf operations, St. Boniface Golf Club.
Wood says they plan to close Sunday to properly protect the greens. Booking tee times might be tough as most other courses have closed. He notes that golf’s popularity has been on the rise ever since COVID, leading to a whole new demographic of residents picking up a club.
“The one thing that covid did was it brought out a lot of the 20 and 30 somethings that needed something to do,” said Wood.
Temperatures are expected to hover around 10 degrees for the rest of the week, and local golfers made sure to get outside and enjoy a beautiful end to the season.
