The federal government has launched the Canada Water Agency as an independent entity, calling it a key step in protecting the health of Canada’s lakes and rivers.
This new agency, based in Winnipeg, will focus on improving water management and conservation across the province.
Its work will include restoring and protecting water bodies like Lake Winnipeg, which is crucial for Manitoba’s First Nations.
“We have a responsibility to protect the waters, and a strong Canada Water Agency will help us do all these things and address new challenges as they arise,” said federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault.
The Canada Water Agency will also support the Freshwater Action Plan by integrating traditional knowledge and strengthening partnerships with First Nations, including the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, who are eager to collaborate to ensure their perspectives and knowledge shape water governance and stewardship.
