Thanksgiving for a Winnipeg family ended in tragedy after a young child fell from the 19th storey apartment window Monday evening. Joanne Roberts reports.

    By News Staff

Winnipeg police say a young child is dead after falling from an apartment building on Thanksgiving.

The Winnipeg Police Service says the child, whose age was not provided to CityNews, fell out of the 19th-storey window of a building on Cumberland Avenue on Monday around 5:30 p.m.

The child was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

Police tell CityNews its child abuse unit investigated, and determined it was an accident.

CityNews spoke to a resident from the building and someone who works in a nearby business. Both confirmed the child fell from the west side of the building onto the roof of the parkade.

Another resident who lives in the building expressed concern about how the window opened wide enough for someone to fall. She provided a video to CityNews that shows safety features built into the building’s windows, including bars and a wooden block, which prevents the window from opening more than a foot wide.

CityNews contacted Avenue Living Communities, which owns the 360 Cumberland Avenue building. The company declined to comment, citing privacy reasons.
