Construction work to start at Portage and Main

Commuters may just want to avoid Portage and Main starting Tuesday, as work will commence to reopen to intersection to pedestrians for the first time since 1979.

Every morning in Winnipeg, thousands of vehicles flow through the intersection at Portage and Main. But beginning this week commuters may just want to find an alternative route around Winnipeg’s most iconic intersection.

Starting Tuesday work will get underway to improve the intersection for both motorists and pedestrians alike.

According to the City over the next four weeks, sections of curb and median lanes on both streets will be closed intermittently while crews prepare to demolish the long-standing concrete barriers. Which is scheduled to commence on November 15th.

“I believe that for the benefit of commuters, for businesses, residents, and taxpayers we need to pursue a more practical alternative. It’s time to open Portage and Main to pedestrian traffic,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in March.

Earlier this year, city council voted in favour of reopening Portage and Main to pedestrians for the time since 1979, which had been a major priority for Mayor Gillingham as the city looks to close the underground concourse below, which is said to need $73 million in repairs.

Work on the intersection is expected to be completed by June 27 of next year, with pedestrian crossings scheduled to open by July 1st.
