Former Winnipeg football coach to be sentenced Monday

On Monday, disgraced High School Football coach, Kelsey McKay will learn his fate at the Winnipeg Law Courts. McKay pleaded guilty last year to nine charges of sexual assault and two counts of luring.

McKay a once prominent figure in Winnipeg’s football community, coached football and taught physical education at Churchill High School, and Vincent Massey Collegiate for parts of two decades.

The 11 offenses that McKay has pleaded guilty to took place when most of the victims were between 15 and 18 years old.  During this time McKay would invite players to his home, where he would show them pornography, massage them and touch their genitals.

The Crown is seeking 25 years behind bars for McKay, in addition to a lifetime order to comply with the Sex Offender Information Registration Act, as well as a lifetime non-communications order between McKay and his victims.

The 53-year-old’s lawyers however have argued that the crown’s submission is “grossly disproportionate” and “un-just” and have asked for a sentence of 13 years and three months.

The last time McKay appeared in Court was back in March, when he addressed the court, apologizing to his victims and their families for the pain he has caused.  Vowing to be a responsible member of the community in the future. We’ll learn Monday if this plea has any sway on Judge Wyant’s decision.
