AMC appoints Betsy Kennedy as Acting Grand Chief

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) says Chief Betsy Kennedy will now be the Acting Grand Chief.

The appointment comes as the AMC looks to hold an election for a new Grand Chief after the sudden passing of Grand Chief Cathy Merrick earlier this month.

Hundreds of people flowed into the Manitoba legislature Wednesday to pay their respects to the late Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Cathy Merrick. Kurt Black reports.

The assembly says Chief Kennedy was appointed due to her nature as a well-respected Leader of War Lake First Nation and Co-Chair of the AMC Women’s Council.

She was also a spokesperson for the AMC during the period of mourning.

The AMC says the election process for the next Grand Chief will be shared with Chiefs and communities in the coming weeks.
