Man dies after being found unresponsive in Winnipeg police holding room

Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) — is investigating the death of a man in police custody Sunday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) say around 3:53 a.m., officers took a man into custody near King Edward Street East and St. Matthews Avenue on an outstanding warrant.

At 4:23 a.m., the man was conveyed to police headquarters and turned over to the Central Processing Unit (CPU) after being medically cleared by the onsite CPU WFPS paramedic.

After being medically cleared, he was placed in a holding room.

A couple hours later at 7:30 a.m., CPU members who were conducting scheduled checks found the man unresponsive in the holding room.

The onsite paramedic provided medical treatment before the man was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Following the death, the WPS alerted the IIU of the matter, and an investigation is underway.
