Winnipeg police are warning the public of a new scam that they’ve received numerous complaints about.
Over the past few weeks, police say they’ve received reports of fraudulent calls alleging to be from financial institutions.
During the calls, the victim is informed their bank accounts have been compromised or that an unauthorized transaction has taken place using their account.
Following this, the victim is advised to secure their money, which results in the victim transferring their money. That transfer then gets intercepted by the scammer.
Police are reminding the public that financial institutions will never direct you to move funds or ask for identifying information over the phone.
Secondly, if you do receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from a financial institution, you should hang up, and call the number on the back of your bank card.
Police are also urging anyone who may be a victim of a scam to report it online on the Winnipeg Police website.
