By News Staff

The 24-year-old Winnipeg motorcyclist in critical condition after a hit and run on a Manitoba highway two weeks ago died of his injuries in hospital, police say.

Selkirk RCMP say the man died two days after being struck from behind by a pickup truck on Highway 44 east of Highway 59 in the early hours of July 29.

Police say the 30-year-old driver of the pickup truck fled the scene. He was later found asleep at the wheel at an address on Henderson Highway, police add.

He was taken into custody for impaired driving causing bodily harm and later released.

Authorities say the accused was re-arrested on Aug. 2 after the motorcyclist’s death and charged with impaired driving causing death. He was released and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 8 in Selkirk.

Selkirk RCMP continue to investigate.
